Introduction:

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the ribs, one on each side of the spine. The kidneys filter about 120 to 150 quarts of blood, producing about 1 to 2 quarts of urine, which builds up waste and excess fluid. Urine flows from the kidney to the bladder through two thin tubes called ureters, one on each side of the bladder. Urine produced by the kidneys gets stored in the bladder. The walls of the bladder remain relaxed while the bladder fills with urine.

Kidney function slows down, and the level of creatinine in the blood rises. Below are the five stages of CKD and GFR:

• The first stage is with a normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min, per 1.73 m2)
• The second stage is mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min per 1.73m2)
• The third stage is A moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min per 1.73m2)
• Third stage B is moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min per 1.73m2)
• Stage IV is severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 mL/min per 1.73m2)
• The fifth stage is the last stage of CKD (GFR < 15 mL/min per 1.73m2)
