Frozen shoulder in other words also known as adhesive capsulitis is defined as a condition that is characterized by stiffness, pain, and inflammation in the shoulder joint. In the shoulder, three bones form a joint called the ball-and-socket joint, i.e., the upper arm (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula), and the collarbone (clavicle). Causes of Frozen Shoulder:

The causes of frozen shoulders are continuous thickening, inflammation, scarring, and shrinkage of the capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint. Any injury in the shoulder leads to a frozen shoulder including bursitis, tendinitis, and rotator cuff injury.

Risk Factors of Frozen Shoulder:

• Age: If the patient is over 40-45 years of age.
• Gender: It was noticed that 70-75 percent of people with frozen shoulders are women.
• Trauma: Surgery or arm fracture can lead to shoulder capsule stiffening.
• Diabetes: It was noticed that diabetic patients are at great risk of developing a frozen shoulder, and symptoms may be more severe.

Stages of Frozen Shoulder:

Stages are usually classified into three stages –

• Painful or Freezing Stage: Pain increases gradually, making shoulder motion harder. Pain tends to be worse at night and can last from 6 weeks to 9 months.
• Frozen: Pain doesn’t worsen and may decrease at this stage. The shoulder remains stiff and lasts from 4 to 6 months.
• Thawing: In this stage, the movement gets easier and may eventually return to normal. The pain may reoccur and take between 6 months to 2 years.
