DEEP BREATH. LONG LIFE. NATURE’S WISDOM. OUR WELLBEING.
The Galápagos tortoise is one of nature’s greatest teachers of longevity. These gentle giants can live well over a century, and one of their quiet secrets is an extraordinarily slow breathing rate — often cited around 4 breaths per minute. This unhurried rhythm keeps their metabolism calm, their energy conserved, and their body in a state of deep balance.
Humans, by contrast, typically breathe 12–20 times per minute in ordinary daily life, and even faster under stress. Yet we too can consciously slow our breath. Slow, deliberate, conscious breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers stress hormones, improves oxygenation, steadies the mind, and supports the body’s natural healing intelligence. In Ayurveda this is the essence of pranayama — the regulation of life force through breath.
The Power of Slow Conscious Breath
When we breathe slowly and mindfully:
- The nervous system shifts from fight-or-flight into rest-and-restore mode.
- Heart rate and blood pressure tend to settle.
- Mental clarity and emotional balance improve.
- The entire system becomes more receptive to healing.
Just as the tortoise’s slow rhythm supports a long, steady life, our own conscious breath can become a daily practice of calm and vitality. Breathe slowly. Live fully.
Clear Vision Through Nature’s Wisdom
In the same holistic spirit, Ayurveda offers time-tested care for the eyes. Modern life — prolonged screen time, pollution, irregular sleep, and mental strain — often leaves the eyes dry, strained, and fatigued. Ayurveda views the eyes as governed by Alochaka Pitta and recommends nourishing therapies that go beyond symptomatic relief.
One of the classical procedures is Netra Tarpana (also called Netra Tarpan), in which warm medicated ghee is retained over the eyes in a carefully formed dough ring. This deeply lubricates and nourishes the ocular tissues, helps relieve dryness and strain, supports visual clarity, and is traditionally used for computer vision syndrome, early refractive issues, and general eye rejuvenation. At centres that practise authentic Ayurveda and Naturopathy, such therapies form part of a broader, individualised approach that also includes diet, lifestyle guidance, herbal support, and other kriyakalpa procedures.
